Biggest Fossil Problem: Cambrian Explosion

“The Cambrian Explosion in the fossil record and the lack of transitional forms show that the fossil record doesn’t support Darwinian Evolution.”

The Geologic Column shows the very general groupings of plant and animal fossils found in the earth’s layers which are interpreted by macro-evolutionists as evidence for different time periods in which these different types of organisms lived.

The lowest (which is interpreted as the earliest) period in which fossils are found is the Cambrian layer. However, there are so many major types (or Phyla) found in this layer that it is referred to as an explosion of fossils!

According to Macro-evolution, the layers below a layer containing organisms should logically contain a series of transitional forms which show a progression leading up to the forms of the organisms in the layer above it. The problem for Macro-evolution is that there are virtually NO transitional forms in the layer below the Cambrian layer.

“Thus a major challenge for advocates of the standard evolutionary model is to demonstrate that the Cambrian Explosion was preceded by a multitude of essentially invisible evolutionary developments.

—Dr. Henry Schaefer

Dr. Schaefer points out that, “The Phyla are the major groups of life forms, based upon large differences in morphology, especially basic body plans. Shortly after the Cambrian explosion there were about 50 phyla.”

There are no transitional fossils showing how all these Phyla developed. So where did they come from?

The basic "Tree of Life" that Darwin Envisioned

Darwin's Concern

“…The number of intermediate varieties, which have formerly existed on the earth, must be truly enormous. Why then is not every geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links? Geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps, is the most obvious and gravest objection which can be urged against my theory.”

—Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species

Darwin believed that further geological research would eventually reveal the intermediate varieties he expected to see but that has not happened.

The basic fossil record diagram would look more like this rather than a tree because the fossil record doesn't show the interrelationships that Darwin envisioned.

What Evolutionists Have Known For Many Years

1981

“As a paleontologist myself, I am much occupied with the philosophical problems of identifying ancestral forms in the fossil record. You say that I should at least “show a photo of the fossil from which each type of organism was derived. I will lay it on the line—there is not one such fossil for which one could make a watertight argument.

—Colin Patterson

Senior paleontologist at the British Museum of Natural History

1980

“The extreme rarity of transitional forms in the fossil record persists as the trade secret of paleontology.

—Stephen J. Gould of Harvard University
